Schticky Schnake

"Well that's different..."

I've done quite a number of things that could be perceived as odd, or strange, or unique...Whatever you'd like to call it. It's not that hard to perplex those who are curious onlookers. Today, however, I added to that list, by discovering the true value of oiling a snake. Yes.

Oiling a snake.

So I was perched at the desk working on something mildly brainwashing, when I heard a shriek behind me. Just as I turned, there was another shriek. Before I could ask, I heard Shannon scream "THERE'S A SNAKE OVER THERE!!"

So I'm thinking, ok, it's probably a baby black racer, you know the ones that you almost mistake for worms. I look over, and here's this 3 foot black snake struggling along the floor. It had attatched to it a sticky trap (thus the struggling) and it looked absolutely ridiculous.
I went over to it, and it lunged itself at me only once, but once I picked it up, it was the most docile snake I've ever encountered (besides my own pet snake). The poor thing had sticky all over it's body, and I eventually shared it's dilemma trying to peel that sommabitch off. That stuff is no joke. That snake stuck to EVERYTHING it touched, including me, including itself. So, we called the humane society to find out what takes the sticky off. They said 'cooking oil will do.'

Yep, that snake went home with me in a box, covered in fuz, paper, dirt, and itself. Into the bathtub he went, along with the cooking oil and the Dawn. I scrubbed the junk off, and believe me, oiling a rat snake in the palm of your hands wild it whips frantically around is quite a daunting task. Not to mention, one of the strangest sensations I can think of. He/she/it was pretty spastic at first, but calmed down once all was said and done. Not once did it attempt to bite.
I dried it (which it seemed to have enjoyed since it involved being coiled up under a towel for a few minutes, then I collected all 3 feet of it into a palmed sized bundle-o-snake, and chose a spot outside. He/she/it calmly slithered off, and I all I could do was bid it a happy hunt.
The End.

Sticky traps should be illegal.

And cheers for you for saving the snake!

That was very cool of you. If someone saw that in my redneck home town they would have definitely left it for dead or killed it. Hats off to you!! I'm glad you saved the poor snakey!!
