It is a rule of mine that if I misspell something in a tattoo, as punishment I have to get the correct spelling of the word tattooed on myself. So far I've gotten away with just one.

Ive done it twice.

Both times the client wrote it for me and i copied it exactly.

Ive even had to put gloves on and dig through the trash to show one chick the paper that she wrote her husbands name wrong on.

I've done it once. Same issue. Client wrote HER OWN NAME down wrong. She double checked my sketch, the stencil, and saw the tattoo when it was done. Came back two days later to complain, to my boss of course. Ugh.

When doing *any* writing tattoo, including foreign languages; I get the client to literally sign off on the final drawing. And I keep every single final drawing in a scrap book.

Then if there's complications later you can point to the customer's signature.

I've had clients misspell their own tattoos about half a dozen times over the last decade.

2 in 7 years aint bad then.
My co worker spelled the name Hector wrong on a lady. It was supposed to be spelled Hekter. We agree that she spelled it wrong. But he fixed it and we had a good laugh.

Ever done a backwards O.E. or anything like that? I've seen a backwards "Lil' Joe" down a guy's arm. He wanted me to fix it and I was just stumped, told him to go back and discuss it with the original artist that fucked it up. Good linework, solid shading, but the dude had obviously gotten his stencil backwards somehow. LOL. I've also seen an upside down Nine Inch Nails logo. I've gotten in the habit of putting arrows on anything that could easily be flipped or reversed.

I always have the clients PRINT the names they want on the back of their form. Sounds like it would stop the potential issue.. right ?

Until someone spells their own kids' names wrong

3 times for me so far. Every time the client provided the spelling and had ample opportunity to correct me. Spirited without the second i - so it was "Free Spirted" - that was early on and even though I fixed it, I still feel really bad about it. Another was a dude who couldn't spell his kid's name right, it didn't help that the kid's name wasn't spelled like normal, Chrissi instead of some other variation of Christine. The third was a French phrase that I missed a space so 2 short words were jammed together - she then blamed me because I told her I took French for a year in High School, which apparently makes me fluent enough to catch such an obvious error.

As for Haden's tattoo, that sux, but that's why I tell everyone to get it in a language you know and not one that looks cool.

I love when a guy wants his kids name and you say, Ok, how do you spell it? And he gets out his cell phone to call the mama....

Names and birthdays, guys always gotta call the baby mom.

We have, like Adam, everyone sign the drawing, and we photocopy that on the back of their release form. I feel embarrased for a lot of people....

If you want to see a lot of whacky grammar, go buy a Japanese tattoo magazine. I guess their version of shitty kanji tattoos are tattoos with shitty English. It sucks though, because a lot of really good pieces are "ruined" :(
