I check his blog pretty regularly, and was surprised to see today that he's moving into a new studio in LA, and will be tattooing again!

Yeah I'd be more inclined to buy some of his paintings then spend $500/hour for a tattoo.

Yeah $500/hour is pretty ludicrous, especially for a guy who's been out of the business for 6ish years? I can't imagine it's the type of thing you just get right back into either, I'd assume there will be a period of re-learning. Some of the best in the world charge $180-$250/hour, I don't know how he expects to succeed charging that much.

um...pretty sure there are 1000's of people willing to pay what he is asking and the first tattoo he did after coming back looked as close to perfect as I have seen. A lot of money I know but who is to say what a piece of art is worth?

I don't disagree with you, and I can understand why he would charge that much (weeding out less serious clientele, being able to take his time with single daily appointments to do smaller tattoos and still make a living, etc.), but in a world where equally talented artists are charging half that hourly rate, I just can't see it being sustainable. I mean yeah, it's art, but when the cost is that prohibitive, you're really limiting your client base.

the cost is only prohibitive to some. There are people out there who spend 300 on shoes.

That's his problem, then, isn't it? Whether anyone else thinks it's a mistake or not, it's ultimately his decision to make. Good luck to 'im, I say.

I'd LOVE to have gone to an all girls high school.

If you think it's too expensive, then don't get one. If you're a tattooer and you feel slighted that he's charging that much, try raising your prices and see how well you do. Chris will do fine and continue to crush everyone else with his style and execution. The haters will continue to hate. It's the only thing they're good at.

Good for him. He's one of the best for a reason and the market will bear that price scale for him.
